2004-2005 Volunteers of the Year!
Organization Committee: Bertha Willoughby

Bertha Willoughby, a native of Rhode Island, moved to New London forty years ago. She worked for the City of New London Personnel Department for 27 years. Since "retiring", she has been a very active part of the New London community as a member on several committees, and President on the Board of Trustees for the New London Library. Bertha's many contributions to NLMS include member enrollment and tracking, helping out at NLMS's Annual Meeting, manning tables at events and basically, stepping in wherever there is a need. On most Friday afternoons you can find Bertha helping out at the NLMS office. Bertha has been a member since 2003.
Design Committee: Bob Stuller

Bob Stuller is a programmer, who works out of his New London home. His interest in Graphic Arts and Photography led Bob to get involved with the organization and design criteria for the first Banner Project. Bob was also active with the Benches Project as well. Bob states, however, that he is probably most fond of the Main Street Clean Up Days, as he very much enjoys seeing the downtown area all spit and polished and looking at its best!
Economic Enhancement Committee: Gwen Basilica

After a long career as a Dental Hygienist, Gwen Basilica decided to leave that field of work, and follow her passion for art, and fused glasswork in particular. These days she is usually found at her gallery, The Empress of Art on Bank Street, where she features her own artwork as well as that of many local artisans. Gwen was instrumental in organizing the downtown merchant kiosks at the train station for the Maasdam Cruise Ship Tours, as well as tour guides through New London Historic sites.
Promotion Committee: Katherine Diaz-Saavedra

Kathy Diaz-Saavedra is a Marketing Director for Eastern Connecticut Cable. Kathy grew up in New London, and resides here still, in a wonderful New London home that she restored with her husband. Kathy chaired the Lights and Song by the Sea event for 2005, a community favorite. Kathy attributes her recognition to the many volunteers and their passion and diligent work on this event. And while that certainly holds some truth, the enthusiasm and community pride that Kathy exudes is a strong motivational force.
Thank you Bob, Gwen, Bertha and Kathy for your contributions and service to New London Main Street and this community!
