CT Main Street Awards 2003
Board member and Promotion Committee Chair Kathy Diaz-Saavedra and Promotion Committee member Gretchen Higgins were recognized at the Awards for Excellence in Downtown Revitalization ceremony at the Connecticut Main Street Center's Annual Meeting in June 2003.
The Board of Directors nominated Diaz-Saavedra as Outstanding Board Member of the Year and Higgins as Volunteer of the Year at the state level due to their investment of considerable personal time and energy in our Main Street program.
Under Kathy's leadership, the Promotion Committee volunteered more than 1,127 hours in 2002, creating two festivals, three mixers, plus publications and programs to stimulate market interest in downtown. Diaz-Saavedra has attended a National Town Meeting and a number of CT Main Street Center seminars and workshops to hone her skills in marketing and promotion for our historic downtown. There have been weeks when Diaz-Saavedra, on top of a full-time job as director of marketing for Eastern Connecticut Cable, has spent more than 15 hours overseeing Main Street initiatives. Some have accused her of doing more than what is humanely possible!
Gretchen Higgins has distinguished herself as aNew London Main Street volunteer in her ability to coordinate complex projects, either single handedly or with others. Thanks to Gretchen, Main Street was able to organize and expand Night Kitchens to include 15 restaurants staying open late for the annual Hygienic art show. The 2003 Main Street poster project and the reception at the Garde Arts Center during Celebrate Regatta all owe their existence to Gretchen's persistence, organization and drive.
