Judith Kuhn's Work Chosen for 2004 Image Campaign
Local Artist's Work Chosen for 2004 Image Campaign
Judith Kuhn has over twenty years experience painting the Groton/New London area. A representational artist who specializes in multi-figures, Judith's preferred medium is oil painting. Judith was recently honored by having her painting Bank Street II chosen as the New London Main Street Poster for 2004-2005. The Poster, which is part of New London Main Street's Image Enhancement Campaign for the downtown Historic Waterfront District, was created using one of the award-winning paintings from Wet Paint Week, which takes place during Books Brushes Jazz & Blues. Judith Kuhn took first prize during Wet Paint Week 2003. Bank Street II is an urban landscape that depicts the beauty of downtown New London, its simplified shapes and vibrant colors giving the painting a dreamy quality.
In May of 2003 Kuhn earned a BFA from The Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts. Upon graduation she was presented with the Stobart Fellowship Award for excellence in painting. She also received a first place award at Mystic Art Association's Fragments show for Norms Diner and now has new work hung in its CAFA Exhibition. Judith now teaches art classes for preschool through adult for the City of Groton at the Zbierski House located at Eastern Point Beach. Anyone interested in more information should contact the City of Groton Parks and Recreation Department at 446-4128.
Kuhn has also been elected to Groton's Colonel Ledyard/Groton Heights School's School Improvement Team and has sat as facilitator for the District Quality Control Council. Individually, she has worked to increase exposure to the arts for children within the after-school environment. With support from the Colonel Ledyard and Groton Heights school districts, and funding through the local PTO, she has created several free after-school programs for children, including the creation and construction of haunted houses with stage-like setups and life-sized paper mache figures. She introduced professional artists to the students and developed a partnership with Connecticut College seniors that brought elementary school children the experience of dance, drumming, and mask-making as a cultural supplement to their Black History Month curriculum.
New London Main Street's Wet Paint Week and Poster Program won the 2004 award for best Image Enhancement Campaign from Connecticut Main Street Center.
