Executive Director's Update, Spring 2006
Today, the Public Works Department raised a set of international signal flags on the flagpole in Waterfront Park to spell out what a special place this is. While we thank the Design Committee and the Frank Loomis Palmer Fund, Bank of America, Trustee, for this colorful addition to the park, we should also celebrate the bright signs of new life cropping up everywhere in the district. New businesses are opening – ten in 2005, creating 27 full-time jobs. Private investment in the district remains high, topping $1.5 million in 2005, while the completion of the Fishers Island Ferry building boosted public investment to over $10 million.
New banners are going up on the lightpoles. Thirty bronze plaques are being set in the sidewalks to make up the Historic Waterfront District Heritage Trail. The 2007 Map & Guide is ready for distribution - to name just a few of the Main Street initiatives blooming this spring.
Thankfully, the renewal in the district has been accompanied by the renewal of support for our program. The Bodenwein Public Benevolent Foundation has renewed the grant for our wonderful volunteer coordinator, Joanne Gibson, and the Community Foundation has provided funds to extend her weekly hours. The Dime has continued to support the publication of the Map & Guide, and the CT Humanities Council continues to support the development of the living history play for Lights & Song. Most important of all is the renewed commitment of our volunteers, the source of so much of this good energy.
While our projects must be limited to our mission - to enhance, preserve and promote the district - and approved by the Board of Directors, we are ready and able to pitch in to make the Historic Waterfront District reach its potential.
