Economic Enhancement Chair's Report, Fall 2007

This fall six visits to New London by three cruise ships, carrying more than 20,000 passengers and crew, provides a unique opportunity for downtown shops, galleries, restaurants, and historic properties to assure that New London becomes a permanent port on the burgeoning "Autumn in New England" cruise ship schedule. The Economic Enhancement Committee will make it a priority to work with its stakeholders to make these visits a success for both the passengers and downtown businesses. If you would like to volunteer as a docent on one of the buses bringing cruise ship passengers from City Pier to downtown, or in any other capacity to help welcome visitors, contact Volunteer Coordinator Joanne Gibson. Training will be provided. This is a great way to share your love of New London!

The Committee is also focusing on assessing the impact on local merchants and restaurants of Main Street events, such as Fish Tales, Tugs and Sails and Celts and Currachs in August, and Books, Brushes, Jazz & Blues in September. The study of how to increase downtown business satisfaction with the bi-annual food strolls is also being completed.

The Economic Enhancement Committee is delighted to see new faces at recent monthly meetings, including Rob Bowman, Michelle Maitland, and Kristin McArdle. The Economic Enhancement Committee meets monthly on the third Thursday at 5:30 PM at the Main Street office.
