Design Committee Report, Spring 2007

Spring is upon us, and downtown New London is looking great! The Design Committee is wrapping up several projects.

The Banner Committee, chaired by Marybeth Quaadgras, has met this year's goal of selling 60 lightpole banners! This year's banner was designed by Felix Reyes, and a striking Mediterranean Blue was chosen for the background color. Sponsor logo designs are being finalized, and banner locations are being mapped out, with banners to be installed just in time to dress up our downtown for the May 9th arrival of the cruise ship Maasdam. Frank McLaughlin, head of sales for this project, plans on 70 sold banners next year - Go for it!

The Union Plaza Courtyard Café Committee, chaired by Kathy Welliver, is in its final exciting stretch: tables, chairs and umbrellas have arrived and will be assembled soon in time for the May 31 Grand Opening. Chris Nelson, along with Connecticut College student Tom Cote, is working on having bike racks installed at Waterfront Park. So far they've come up with a design and plan to have the racks installed just in time for the nice weather. How refreshing to have the option of parking your bike at the Waterfront Park and walking!

Our committee is continuing to identify new projects for the coming year. Please consider joining the Design Committee if the appearance of the district is your passion. The Design Committee meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday at 5:30 PM at the Main Street office. All are welcome!
