Design Committee Report, Fall 2007

The Design Committee has several ongoing projects that are sure to stir up excitement in downtown New London's Historic Waterfront District this fall. After the placement of the final banner, the Courtyard Café is now complete, transforming an unattractive and unused space into a vibrant and colorful one!

Barun Basu and Matthew Halligan are spearheading the bike rack project, considering a custom design and working with the Office of Development & Planning to determine appropriate locations on the waterfront.

Marybeth Quaadgras has graciously agreed to start the ball rolling as chair of the Lightpole Banner Committee, with Board President Frank McLaughlin heading up sales. Work is underway to design and market the 2008 banner!

Main Street has received a Frank Loomis Palmer Fund grant to begin the process of designing one of three gateways to the Historic Waterfront District. Few people realize that downtown consists of several National Register Historic Districts, as designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Among other things, gateways can inform the public about the historic significance of the District and include directional wayfinding information. Kate Wick will be spearheading this exciting project.

The Design Committee meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday at 5:30 PM in the Main Street office.
