Local Artist Takes First in New London Main Street's Wet Paint Week Competition

New London native Tory Bryant won first place in this year's Wet Paint Week event that took place September 4-11, 2004. New London Main Street held this annual outdoor painting event, now in its third year, in cooperation with the maritime, literary and culinary arts festival Boats, Books & Brushes.

Tory Bryant's winning piece is called Last Stop and features New London's Union Station. Bryant graduated with a B.F.A. from the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts and is an active participant with the Connecticut Commission of the Arts. She is working on a multitude of projects ranging from oil painting commissions to book illustrations as well as sculpting two historic monument pieces for the Town of Brooklyn. Deb Harrison at New London Main Street's Wet Paint Week Competition

Artists were invited to paint outdoors in the location of their choice within the Historic Waterfront District of New London and, at week's end, display their finished works at a gallery tent on City Pier Plaza during the festival. The entries were judged by Pamela Pike Gordinier, a painter who exhibits regionally and teaches at the Mystic Arts Center and the Lyman Allyn Museum, and Karen Barthelson, Interim Director of the Mystic Arts Center. Over 21 local artists entered a total of 37 pieces.

Second place went to Robert Hauschild of New London with Rainy Night in New London, third place to Judith Kuhn of Groton with Downtown and honorable mentions to Jan Velsmid of Westbrook, Karin Oscarson Bastidas of Mystic and Cindy Walker of Niantic.
