Karen Romano Young's Across the Wide Ocean

Karen Romano Young spent two years researching, writing, and illustrating this 80-page book for children ages 9 to 12. Her research took her from the deck of a tugboat in New York Harbor to the beaches of South Carolina to the laboratory of Woods Hole whale biologist Michael Moore to the bottom of the ocean in the tiny submarine Alvin... and more. A resident of Bethel, Connecticut, she has written picture books, novels, curriculum materials, and several nonfiction books with a strong ocean focus. Karen works as a marine science educator at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut, where she teaches about the tides, global warming, and shark physiology, leads squid dissections, and knows her way around a horseshoe crab.

Illustrated by Karen, "Across the Wide Ocean: The Why, How, and Where of Navigation for Humans and Animals at Sea" is for navigators of all ages, but especially children ages 8 to 12. Barbara Shaw McKinney is a teacher as well as a poet. She was inspired to use the magic of children's literature to spark her students' curiosity about the wonders of water. She is also the author of "Pass the Energy Please!", a wonderful exploration of nature's food chain, written in rhyming verse. Nancy Elizabeth Wallace is the author and illustrator of several children's books, including Tell a Bunny; Apples, Apples, Apples; and A Taste of Honey. Her colorful artwork is made from meticulously layered cut-paper shapes, giving it a three-dimensional quality.
