Books, Brushes, Jazz & Blues 2006
Friday, September 8 - Sunday, September 10, 2006 New London Main Street will host Books, Brushes, Jazz & Blues, a new festival, in the downtown Historic Waterfront District. The weekend event will feature a show of artists who have painted scenes of the district during the week prior to the festival and readings by regional authors. The show and the readings will be held from noon to 6 PM on Saturday and from noon to 5 PM on Sunday at the Hygienic Galleries and Art Park. More than 20 downtown clubs and restaurants will offer performances in the evening and at various times during the day by popular blues or jazz artists, many who hail from the region. (PDF, 1.8 MB; updated 2006-08-28) Updated schedules of readings (PDF, 150 KB; updated 2006-09-07) and performances (PDF, 102 KB; updated 2006-09-07) are also available.
The artists are part of the fifth annual Wet Paint Week, an en plein air event during which artists will paint outdoors beginning September 1. Artists can compete for cash prizes, which will be awarded on Sunday. Registration is open to all area artists. The form can be downloaded from the Main Street Web site. (The deadline for registration was extended to August 25 2006.)
The "Books" part of the festival is being presented by New London Voices, a group of local authors who organized a reading by writers who were not scheduled to participate in last year's Boats, Books & Brushes. The reading was so successful the group decided to do it again in conjunction with the new festival, which it helped to create. Applications for reading time are now closed.
Sponsored by New London Main Street, Adagio Piano & Jazz Cafe, and the Connecticut Humanities Council.
