Built in 1833, the Custom House remains the oldest operating custom house in the nation. Robert Mills, America's first federal architect, who also executed the Washington Monument, the US Treasury Building, and other significant government structures, designed the building. A classic Greek Revival granite building, the front doors are made from wood from the USS Constitution. In 1839, US Customs played an important role in the early steps to freedom of Mendi Africans brought to New London with the slave ship Amistad. Admission: free, but donations gladly accepted.
